Based on a true story, this comic is from notalwaysright.com. And it happens on a daily basis in my store. We have two self-checkouts and I’d say there is a problem with one of them about every 3-4 customers on the average. 90% of the problems are from the scale not weighing something accurately. Sometimes it’s the customer’s fault (don’t take the item off the scale, you haven’t paid for it yet…) but a lot of times it’s not their fault.
Sadly, you’ll be seeing more and more ACO’s (Assisted Checkouts) being placed in stores as labor hours are cut more and more. I often see customers who PREFER to use the self-checkout even if there is no one in line and a cashier standing there ready to help them. I guess there are those who are not interested in interacting with a live person and would rather speak to a soulless computer instead. After all, they are testing robots to replace employees giving customer service at Lowe’s, so perhaps this is where we’re headed anyway.
