I’ve asked everyone to share their favorite customer stories and here’s one of mine. In the very first store that I worked in back in the 70’s, we had a safe in the front of the store (near the registers) with a big dial in the middle that looked something like this:
So a lady walks into our drug store carrying an armful of wet clothes, comes to my register and it went something like this:
Customer: (hands me a $5.00 bill) “Can I have change for the dryer?”
Me: Sure, what kind of change do you need for it?
Customer: (Points to the safe) Well you should know, it’s your dryer!!
One of my biggest regrets is that I didn’t just give her some quarters and say “Go ahead, it only takes one quarter.”
I think I can beat that! had a customer that came to my checkout wearing a beanie and he was buying a 6-pack. I noticed that there was some blood dripping down from under the beanie and it was leaking on his face. I ask him if he’s ok and he gets all flustered and grabs the beer w/o paying and jets towards the door. The manager and 2 guys grab him and turns out he was trying to steal 2 steaks which were under his beanie and had started to drip. If he paid for the beer he would have gotten out with some good meat!
