It’s Great When Customers Step Up

This is me when a customer is being an idiot to me.

If you’ve worked in retail you’ve undoubtedly had an abusive customer who was taking out their anger on you for no apparent reason.   I’ve had my fair share and even had a lady smack me on the shoulder with her cane at one store.   I always have to just remain calm, nod, say “I understand how you feel” and then politely try to solve their problem.   Of course if they cross the magic line and start using profanity or threats, the gloves are off and I will (again, politely) ask them to hit the road.

Once in a while, however, another customer will come to your aid and do what you can’t do, namely tell the abusive person what a jerk they are being.    Then I can just shrug my shoulders and say “What he said.”   Here’s a kind soul who spent $20 of his own money to do the right thing for a retail employee.   He was then rewarded with a $50 gift card, which proves that kindness does pay.
