\u00a0 \u00a0I’ve seen some people try and return some crazy things in my career, but this one surprised even me.\u00a0 \u00a0A lady returned her Christmas tree to Costco weeks after Christmas and requested (and was given!!) a refund because it died.\u00a0 \u00a0Did she expect it to live until next Christmas?<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 Obviously she was brazen enough to take advantage of Costco’s lenient “no questions asked” return policy, although if I was Costco I’d be putting an asterisk on that one regarding Christmas trees because once this gets around there will probably be an onslaught of returns next January.\u00a0 \u00a0Some people are saying the woman must be desperate for money, but how desperate can she be if she could afford to buy a Christmas tree in the first place?\u00a0 She’s certainly not homeless.<\/p>\n

I remember years ago when Target first came to California and they also had a “no questions asked” returns policy.\u00a0 They had an expensive stereo system which sold for about $200 on an endcap, and people would pick one up, take it to the returns desk and request (and were given) a refund.\u00a0 At some point they did sales tracking and discovered that they had refunded far more than they had actually sold!!\u00a0 Apparently the police department in one city sent them a letter advising them to change their policy because it was encouraging theft and eventually they modified it.<\/p>\n

I know that large companies have the attitude of “Let the refund abusers do their thing, it’s a small percentage of our sales etc.” but they’ve probably never been at the returns desk when someone asked to return a used diaper. There definitely needs to be some discretion allowed at the store level.\u00a0 Just sayin’.<\/p>\n

Christmas is over so it\u2019s time to take down your Christmas tree\u2026 or return it to the shop that sold it to you? A woman has decided to\u00a0do just that. On the 4th of January, she demanded Costo a refund\u00a0because her\u00a0Christmas tree \u201cis dead\u201d and one eye-witness has documented the entire thing. After he shared the ridiculous story on the internet, people can\u2019t make up their minds if the shot responded accordingly or if they\u2019re totally nuts.<\/em><\/p>\n

To give you some background, Costco Wholesale Corporation, trading as Costco, is an American multinational corporation which operates a chain of membership-only warehouse clubs. As of 2015, Costco was the second largest retailer in the world (after Walmart), and it guarantees almost all of their products with a full refund.
