The private equity firms Kohlberg Kravis Roberts and Bain Capital, as well as the real estate firm Vornado Realty Trust, purchased the company in a leveraged buyout for about\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2005\/03\/17\/business\/three-firms-are-said-to-buy-toys-r-us-for-6-billion.html\">$6 billion in 2005<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"story-continues-1\" class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"188\" data-total-count=\"988\"><em>The company faced $400 million in debt payment coming due in 2018 and was burning through its cash. It hired advisers, including the law firm\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/09\/06\/business\/toys-r-us-bankruptcy-advisers.html?mcubz=3\">Kirkland &amp; Ellis<\/a>, to help come up with a plan.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"story-continues-2\" class=\"story-interrupter\">\u00a0<em>In a statement on Monday night, Toys \u201cR\u201d Us said the filing would help the company invest in long-term growth and \u201cfuel its aspirations to bring play to kids everywhere and be a best friend to parents everywhere.&#8221;<\/em><\/div>\n<div class=\"story-body-supplemental\">\n<div class=\"story-body story-body-2\">\n<div id=\"newsletter-promo\" class=\"newsletter-signup auto-newsletter variant-1-hidden\" data-newsletter-productcode=\"\" data-newsletter-producttitle=\"\" aria-labeledby=\"newsletter-promo-heading\">\n<form class=\"newsletter-form\" autocomplete=\"off\" method=\"post\" name=\"regilite\">\n<div class=\"control checkbox-control\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"captcha-container\" class=\"g-recaptcha\" data-sitekey=\"6LeN0R4TAAAAACwPa5WX2QYE0npOf2-2veTOm2Tp\"><\/div>\n<\/form>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"326\" data-total-count=\"1524\"><em>Toys \u201cR\u201d Us joins a wave of retail bankruptcies this year, including the children\u2019s clothing retailer Gymboree, Payless ShoeSource and rue21, which sells clothing for teenagers.
