{"id":2059,"date":"2016-08-26T16:16:44","date_gmt":"2016-08-26T23:16:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/re-tales.net\/?p=2059"},"modified":"2016-08-26T16:16:44","modified_gmt":"2016-08-26T23:16:44","slug":"mysterious-project-x-points-to-amazon-drive-up-grocery-store-in-seattle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/re-tales.net\/?p=2059","title":{"rendered":"Mysterious \u2018Project X\u2019 points to Amazon drive-up grocery store in Seattle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So as more and more brick and mortar retailers are shutting down due to increased competition from online, it looks like something is heading in the opposite direction. \u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/geekwire.com\">Geekwire\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0has learned that Amazon is opening a store in Seattle (Project X? \u00a0Really? \u00a0That wasn&#8217;t even a good Matthew Broderick movie) \u00a0where customers will place an order online and then pick it up at the curb of the store without ever having to leave their cars. \u00a0 I blogged in June how <a href=\"http:\/\/re-tales.net\/?p=1950\">Target has bailed on curbside pickup at their stores<\/a>, and CVS might be next. (GeekWire Photo)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Amazon is planning to open a\u00a0drive-up grocery store in\u00a0Seattle, newly discovered planning documents suggest.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Permit filings\u00a0uncovered by GeekWire\u00a0show plans to renovate the former Louie\u2019s Cuisine of China site, at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/5100+15th+Ave+NW,+Seattle,+WA+98107\/@47.666058,-122.378032,17z\/data=!4m13!1m7!3m6!1s0x549015c820ca0d3d:0x5ca03776c89f4557!2s5100+15th+Ave+NW,+Seattle,+WA+98107!3b1!8m2!3d47.666058!4d-122.375838!3m4!1s0x549015c820ca0d3d:0x5ca03776c89f4557!8m2!3d47.666058!4d-122.375838\">5100 15th Ave. N.W.<\/a> in Seattle\u2019s Ballard neighborhood, into a 9,759-square-foot\u00a0retail space where customers can pick up groceries that they\u2019ve ordered online, in what the project team calls \u201ca new model of grocery shopping.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The company\u00a0appears to be doing its best to keep its involvement under wraps.\u00a0Planning documents filed with the city of Seattle\u00a0use\u00a0the mysterious moniker \u201cProject X,\u201d with no reference to the e-commerce giant. Even the people building the project don\u2019t know what\u2019s happening.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cNo idea,\u201d one worker said\u00a0when asked what would be going into the building. \u201cWe had to sign our life away. Half the guys in there don\u2019t even know what they are working on.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIt\u2019s a big secret \u2014 they won\u2019t tell anyone,\u201d another worker said.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>However, the\u00a0description of the project matches, almost exactly, the language in\u00a0planning documents for Amazon drive-up grocery stores <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/sanjose\/news\/2016\/05\/16\/exclusive-amazon-planning-second-drive-up-grocery.html\">planned in the San Francisco Bay Area<\/a>. Peak time slots will sell out, which will help manage traffic flow within the customer parking adjacent to the building. When picking up purchased items, customers can either drive into a designated parking area with eight parking stalls where the purchased items will be delivered to their cars or they can walk into the retail area to pick up their items. Customers will also be able to walk into the retail room to place orders on a tablet. Walk in customers will have their products delivered to them in the retail room.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>Hours of operation are expected to be 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. At peak time, there will be approximately 15 employees working on site, and three to five people will be dedicated to bringing orders out to parked cars.\u00a0About a quarter of all trips are expected to occur between 5 and 7:30 p.m. The average wait time is expected to be about five minutes.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Word of the project has spread through the neighborhood. Tony Mazzarella is the owner of Mac\u2019s Upholstery Shop, which has been in business since 1948 across the street from the future pick-up grocery. He is\u00a0aware of the project and has no problem\u00a0with it. However, Mazzarella is concerned about new development in the neighborhood and traffic issues.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI don\u2019t care, it\u2019s fine \u2026 it\u2019s not going to bother me,\u201d Mazzarella said of the new pick-up grocery store. \u201cThose apartments across the street bother me, with no parking.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Plans for the Amazon grocery stores haven\u2019t <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smdailyjournal.com\/articles\/lnews\/2016-05-18\/amazon-drive-thru-in-san-carlos-may-get-chilly-reception-increased-traffic-and-deliveries-may-mar-new-grocery-proposal\/1776425163558.html\">gone over well in the Bay Area<\/a> with some residents and elected officials.\u00a0They argue the stores would clog important arterials during commuting hours both with customers picking up orders and delivery trucks bringing product to the store. The neighborhood has undergone a major transformation in recent years, fueled largely by the tech boom, with\u00a0condo and apartment units springing up seemingly all over\u00a0to accommodate an influx of new residents.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>In planning documents, the project team writes that six pick-up parking stalls should be sufficient to handle 99.7 percent of demand, and the nine customer pick-up parking spots on site \u2014 the document lists the number of parking stalls as both eight and nine \u2014 should\u00a0be more than enough. There are another five parking spots on the site, according to planning documents.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The move represents further commitment to the brick and mortar realm for the online shopping giant. Amazon <a href=\"http:\/\/www.geekwire.com\/2015\/amazons-first-bookstore-launches-in-seattle-with-a-long-line-out-the-door\/\">opened its first physical bookstore<\/a> at the University Village shopping center in Seattle late last year. It has also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.geekwire.com\/2015\/amazon-launches-prime-now-1-hour-delivery-in-seattle-area-including-beer-wine-and-booze\/\">opened multiple local Prime Now<\/a>\u00a0hubs that offer one-hour delivery on many different types of items.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Property records show that an entity related to a Seattle-based property management company and brokerage firm <a href=\"http:\/\/seattlehouses.com\/\">Real Property Associates<\/a>\u00a0bought the site in 2014 for about $2.5 million.
