{"id":1163,"date":"2015-08-16T06:29:30","date_gmt":"2015-08-16T13:29:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/re-tales.net\/?p=1163"},"modified":"2015-08-16T06:29:30","modified_gmt":"2015-08-16T13:29:30","slug":"sunday-soapbox-gender-neutral-signs-are-coming","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/re-tales.net\/?p=1163","title":{"rendered":"Sunday Soapbox&#8211;Gender Neutral Signs Are Coming"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"google_elide\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/CGct96FUgAA4hBA.jpg:large\" alt=\"\" width=\"257\" height=\"343\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"google_elide\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Target is taking out the designations &#8220;Boys&#8221; and &#8220;Girls&#8221; in their toy and bedding departments in response to complaints they needed to be more gender neutral. \u00a0While I applaud their desire to be socially correct and personally harbor no ill-will to transgender folks, is this going to mean we&#8217;ll have to stop separating the men&#8217;s hair color from the women&#8217;s, men&#8217;s shavers from women&#8217;s and so on? \u00a0 Please say it ain&#8217;t so. \u00a0 The men who shop in our store have a hard enough time finding things as it is. \u00a0And are they going to have to rename &#8220;Just For Men&#8221; hair color too? \u00a0 That is all.<\/p>\n<p class=\"google_elide\">Tomorrow I&#8217;ll share one guy&#8217;s awesome response to the Target controversy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"google_elide\">\u00a0 \u00a0 <em>\u00a0Last week Target <a href=\"https:\/\/corporate.target.com\/article\/2015\/08\/gender-based-signs-corporate\" target=\"_blank\">announced<\/a>\u00a0it will phase out some gender-based signs in its stores, specifically in the toy and bedding aisles. Giving shoppers a more gender-neutral experience seems to be the brand&#8217;s response to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/abianne\/status\/605503223575781376\" target=\"_blank\">complaints it received on social media<\/a>\u00a0earlier this summer.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"google_elide\"><em>Now Target&#8217;s decision to retool its in-store experience is making headlines, but could it kick-start a trend with other major retailers?\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"google_elide\"><em>According to Target&#8217;s announcement, it will remove references to gender in toy and bedding sections over the next few months. It&#8217;ll also stop using pink, blue, yellow and green paper to denote shelves with items targeted to boys or girls. The brand listened to feedback from consumers and &#8220;decided that this was the right time to make a couple of adjustments in our stores,&#8221; according to a spokeswoman. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"google_elide\"><em>&#8220;It&#8217;s the socially correct thing to do, and for certain segments it&#8217;s going to send the right signals, but I don&#8217;t think there will be a mad rush to the gender-neutral trend,&#8221; said Allen Adamson, North American chairman at brand consulting firm Landor. &#8220;Other retailers will follow because Target is a leader and innovative, but there will not be a stampede.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"google_elide\"><em>Other major retailers like Walmart and Toys &#8220;R&#8221; Us don&#8217;t actually use gender-based signs, according to Jim Silver, chief executive and editor in chief of toy review site <a href=\"http:\/\/ttpm.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">TTPM<\/a>. &#8220;They have it broken down by category and lose the connotation of boys and girls toys,&#8221; he said.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"google_elide\"><em>Still, branding experts see it as a winning move for Target. And more than a trend toward gender-neutral signage, it signals a shift in the way brands react to shoppers on social media\u2014ultimately elevating the importance of customer feedback.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"google_elide\"><em>&#8220;Target is doing what a good brand does,&#8221; said Leesa Wytock, head of digital activation for branding agency Siegel+Gale, &#8220;which is listen to what&#8217;s going on out there, listen to how their customer base is responding to it and think about if, as a brand, it is the right move for them to do something about it or not to do something about it.&#8221;\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"google_elide\"><em>The change is a reflection of the growing power of consumers and how social media can help them make a change, say branding experts.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"google_elide\"><em>&#8220;This is not about political correctness,&#8221; said Rob Gregory, chief revenue officer of social media site WhoSay. &#8220;What it&#8217;s really about is the illumination that social media brings to a brand&#8217;s true intentions.
