After early buzz that included a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=KPvyq_KmXhc\" target=\"_blank\">Van Hagar-soundtracked Super Bowl ad<\/a> and some initial success, the cola\u2019s popularity petered out and by 1994 PepsiCo had stopped production. More than 20 years later, Crystal Pepsi is poised for a comeback, and it&#8217;s all thanks to a persistent competitive eater and a whole bunch of vomit.<\/em><\/div>\n<div class=\"fb-like fb_iframe_widget\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/mentalflossmagazine\" data-width=\"640px\" data-layout=\"standard\" data-action=\"like\" data-show-faces=\"false\" data-share=\"false\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><em>Kevin Strahle, a.k.a. L.A. Beast, runs a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCDZESjYAwh-ws7ZSZZ8DKeg\" target=\"_blank\">YouTube channel<\/a> where he takes on extreme eating challenges and stunts. In 2013, he bought 20-year-old Crystal Pepsi off eBay for $80 and filmed himself chugging it. In the video he expresses surprise that the stale soda tastes &#8220;amazing,&#8221; but he soon becomes queasy, asking, \u201cIs it supposed to sit in your stomach like that?\u201d before he barfs it all out in a wide, crystal clear spray. The video <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CGwibPdEOVk\" target=\"_blank\">currently has over 11 million views<\/a> on YouTube.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cSince that day,\u201d Strahle says over the phone, \u201cI\u2019ve been passionate about Crystal Pepsi.\u201d The video helped grow his fame on the Internet, and L.A. Beast&#8217;s YouTube channel currently has 1.2 million subscribers.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>This April, Strahle bought another bottle of Crystal Pepsi with an even grander goal in mind. In a video titled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=B7dYOhI61bA\" target=\"_blank\">Pepsi Needs To Bring Back Crystal Pepsi (Warning: Extreme Rainbow Vomit)<\/a>&#8220;, Strahle drinks five squirt bottles of colored milk through his nose, chugs a SURGE (another once-discontinued soda), and pounds a yellow-tinted 20-year-old Crystal Pepsi. He then takes a homemade painting of a Crystal Pepsi bottle and upchucks neon puke all over it.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Pepsi Needs To Bring Back Crystal Pepsi | ft. He sold the vomit-covered painting on eBay for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ebay.com\/itm\/201343201194?ssPageName=STRK%3AMESELX%3AIT&amp;_trksid=p3984.m1558.l2649\" target=\"_blank\">$5,000<\/a>, which he then used to help fund his efforts. He bought billboards in Los Angeles and urged his fans to swarm Pepsi\u2019s social media accounts with the hashtag #BringBackCrystalPEPSI. The soda\u2019s Instagram page was flooded with over 50,000 comments about the campaign and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/pepsico-bring-back-crystal-pepsi-11\" target=\"_blank\">Change.org petition<\/a> has so far gathered almost 35,000 signatures.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>On June 8th, Pepsi sent Strahle a letter informing him his plan worked; Crystal Pepsi is coming back:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/CG_0xBVVAAATdf5.jpg\" alt=\"Embedded image permalink\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Everything has just kind of exploded,\u201d Strahle says. \u201cIt\u2019s awesome. I\u2019m speechless.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Whether PepsiCo plans to issue the soda as a limited release or goes for a full rollout with Crystal Pepsi is still unknown, but the above letter has been <a href=\"http:\/\/adage.com\/article\/cmo-strategy\/crystal-pepsi-poised-a-comeback\/298964\/\" target=\"_blank\">confirmed as real<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The man who PepsiCo cordially calls \u201cMr. Beast\u201d actually used to work for the company. \u201cI worked on the trucks delivering Pepsi in the summers in college,\u201d he says. From 2008 to 2010 he stocked shelves for the soda manufacturer and hoped to move his way up to sales, but was told he \u201cwasn\u2019t persistent enough to be a salesman.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI have never forgotten that,\u201d he says. \u201cThe satisfaction\u2019s there.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>As for other discontinued products he\u2019d like to lend his powers of resurrection to, Strahle has some ideas. \u201cPeople have already started saying they want Dunkaroos back and 3D Doritos. I think another drink from my childhood I can get behind is Hi-C Ecto-Cooler. I was on eBay and like the top bid for one original little juice box sold for like $800 dollars.
