Sharing the final moments with a person we love can be a small respite in a truly difficult situation.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"hr\">&#8230;..<\/span><\/p>\n<\/section>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"pull-right fancy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.helpscout.net\/images\/resources\/stories\/united-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When Kerry Drake got on his United Airline flight, the mother he was en route to see was facing her final hours. To add an extra layer of distress, Drake knew that if he missed his connecting flight he would likely not see her before she passed.<\/p>\n<p>After his first flight got delayed, Drake broke down into tears on the plane. The flight attendants soon noticed his state and quickly found out what was wrong. Within minutes, Drake\u2019s dilemma was relayed to the captain, who radioed ahead to Drake\u2019s next flight.<\/p>\n<p>The flight\u2019s crew responded by delaying the flight\u2019s departure to make sure he got on board.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI was still like maybe 20 yards away when I heard the gate agent say, \u2018Mr. Drake, we\u2019ve been expecting you,\u2019\u201d he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>When Drake finally sat on the second flight, he realized how much went into getting him onto the plane.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"large\"><p>\u201cI was overcome with emotion!\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fancy pull-right\" src=\"http:\/\/www.helpscout.net\/images\/resources\/stories\/united-2b.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The result of many staff members working together to go above-and-beyond the call of duty to help this customer was that Drake made it to the hospital in time to see his mother.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAt one point she opened her eyes, and I think she recognized me,\u201d said Drake, who spent the night at the hospital. \u201cAround 4 a.m. she had a real moment of coherence, a last rally, although we didn\u2019t know it at the time. It was the last time.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>She died that very morning.<\/p>\n<p>Drake wrote the staff a heartfelt thank you letter expressing his immense gratitude for a team who was willing to pull together and pull out all the stops to assist in any way they could.<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.helpscout.net\/images\/resources\/stories\/united-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2013\/03\/06\/travel\/united-flight-delay-dying-mother\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">coverage of this story on CNN<\/a>, consumer advocate Christopher Elliot said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u201cAirline employees are evaluated based on their ability to keep a schedule. Airlines compete with each other on who has the best on-time departure record.
