{"id":569,"date":"2015-03-20T17:03:46","date_gmt":"2015-03-21T00:03:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/re-tales.net\/?p=569"},"modified":"2015-03-22T08:59:47","modified_gmt":"2015-03-22T15:59:47","slug":"20-delicious-facts-about-peeps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/re-tales.net\/?p=569","title":{"rendered":"20 Delicious Facts About Peeps"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"primary-image\">\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mentalfloss.com\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/article_640x430\/public\/how-to-make-peeps_0.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"430\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-image\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-image\">Easter is on the way so here&#8217;s some fun facts about a candy with zero nutrition values and tons of calories but we all can&#8217;t resist popping a package of them into our mouth. \u00a0 Well, at least I can&#8217;t&#8211;I&#8217;ve had a yearly tradition of eating 1 pack of Peeps and 1 Cadbury Egg prior to Easter for as long as I can remember. \u00a0I used to eat the 5 Peeps all at once, but now I eat just a couple at a time so I don&#8217;t go into insulin shock.<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-image\">\u00a0 \u00a0 When I first started in retail, life was simpler. \u00a0 Yellow Peeps (5-pack) and Pink Peeps (5-pack.) \u00a0Like everything else except for In N Out Burgers, they expanded and expanded the line until now my store literally has an 8-foot section of just Peeps&#8211;and not all of them are edible! \u00a0Besides the flavors listed below, we also have Peep Bubble Wands, Peep Gift Sets, and various sizes of Peep Plush, all the way up to a giant one (4&#8242; tall) that sells for $50. \u00a0 Well I should say it&#8217;s retailed for $50&#8211;everyone loves to come in and take selfies with the Giant Peep but thus far no \u00a0one has bought one, something tells me it will still be around to go 5-75% off after Easter.<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-image\">\u00a0 \u00a0 My favorite below is #9 saying that Peeps are almost indestructible. \u00a0 It makes you wonder if you put a cockroach in a room with a stack of Peeps who would survive.<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-image\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-image\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-image\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\">\n<p><b>1. Back then, each chick was handmade with a pastry tube. Just Born quickly set about automating the process, so that it now takes just six minutes to make a Peep.<\/em><\/p>\n<h4><b>2. Created by Sam Born\u2019s son, Bob, The Depositor could manufacture six rows of five Peeps apiece at a fraction of the time it took workers to form them by hand. And that same machine that Bob built has been keeping the Peeps flowing ever since. Until now\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Last year the company announced plans to renovate its manufacturing plant, including The Depositor. \u201cIt\u2019s a little sad,\u201d vice president of corporate affairs <a href=\"http:\/\/www.candyindustry.com\/articles\/86070-theyre-just-born-to-be-sweet\">Matthew Pye told Candy Industry magazine<\/a> in February of 2014. \u201cBob Born made it from scratch in 1954 and it allowed us to distribute and grow the brand nationally.&#8221;\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h4><b>6. THE NEW EQUIPMENT COULD MEAN NEW PEEPS INNOVATIONS.<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><em>\u201cThe investment in our marshmallow making process will allow for more efficiency, more consistency, improved quality, and additional innovation capabilities,\u201d co-CEO Ross Born toldCandy Industry magazine about the new depositor, which will be able to produce a wider variety of Peeps in all sizes. \u201cThe [old] Peeps line did one thing and one thing very well\u2014cranking out chicks day in and day out. Five clusters, just in different colors,\u201d Born said.<\/em><\/p>\n<h4><b>7. PEEPS USED TO HAVE WINGS.<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><em>They were clipped in 1955, two years after the first marshmallow chicks hatched, to give the candy a sleeker, more \u201cmodern\u201d look.<\/em><\/p>\n<h4><b>8. THE EYES ARE THE FINAL TOUCH.<\/b><\/h4>\n<div id=\"file-168164--21\" class=\"file file-image file-image-png\">\n<div class=\"content\"><em>The final flourish for all of these squishy balls of sweetness is adding the eyes, which are made of carnauba\u2014a non-toxic edible wax (that is also found in some shoe polishes and car waxes, plus many other candies).<\/em><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h4><b>9. PEEPS MAY BE DESTRUCTIBLE, BUT THEIR EYES ARE NOT.<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><em>In 1999, a pair of scientists at Emory University\u2014dubbed \u201cPeeps Investigators\u201d\u2014 decided to<a href=\"http:\/\/www.emory.edu\/EMORY_REPORT\/erarchive\/1999\/March\/ermarch.29\/3_29_99peeps.html\">test the theory that Peeps are an indestructible food<\/a>. In addition to a microwave, the pair tested the candy\u2019s vulnerability to tap water, boiling water, acetone, and sulfuric acid (they survived them all). When they upped the ante with some Phenol, the only thing that didn\u2019t disappear were the eyes.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h4><b>10. THEY REALLY <i>ARE<\/i> EVERYONE\u2019S FAVORITE NON-CHOCOLATE EASTER CANDY.<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><em>For the past 20 years, no other non-chocolate Easter candy has been able to compete with the power of Peeps. With more than 1.5 billion of them consumed each spring, Peeps have topped the list of most popular Easter treats for two decades.<\/em><\/p>\n<h4><b>11.
