{"id":2074,"date":"2016-09-05T09:53:03","date_gmt":"2016-09-05T16:53:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/re-tales.net\/?p=2074"},"modified":"2016-09-05T09:53:03","modified_gmt":"2016-09-05T16:53:03","slug":"walmart-cuts-7000-jobs-in-their-stores","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/re-tales.net\/?p=2074","title":{"rendered":"Walmart Cuts 7,000 Jobs In Their Stores"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"article-bottom\">\n<div class=\"article-body-text rail-offset\">\n<p><i>\u00a0 \u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/d1stfe5sz9ezud.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/583d13ad2c807850a4452747d20c17b0.jpg\" alt=\"Image result for walmart images\" width=\"372\" height=\"229\" \/><\/i><\/p>\n<p>Walmart is finally doing something that happened at Longs Drugs over a decade ago, namely eliminating the &#8220;bookkeeping&#8221; position(s) in the store. \u00a0They have decided it&#8217;s more cost-effective to have those functions done at corporate level and the cash-counting can be done by pretty much anyone who can do basic math (as is done at CVS.)<\/p>\n<p>They are saying they will transition those people into other positions on the sales floor, and I&#8217;m sure that&#8217;s their intent, but the reality is that there&#8217;s a lot of long-term employees that have been doing just the office work and they will probably not desire to go out on the floor and serve customers. \u00a0So they will be losing some high-paid employees who have been there a long time. \u00a0The same thing happened when CVS acquired Longs and eliminated the bookkeeping position completely.<\/p>\n<p>Of course they are saying it&#8217;s being done to improve customer service, and what usually happens is that those hours will be added into the front store and they will in fact pick up a couple people for a bit. \u00a0But then, next year, lo and behold the hours budgets will be adjusted and they&#8217;ll be back down to the number of employees they had in the first place. \u00a0 \u00a0(If you&#8217;re wondering how I can say this with such certainty, it&#8217;s because that&#8217;s what ALWAYS has happened in the past when positions are eliminated or changed.<\/p>\n<p>Just another logical step in the evolution of a retailer, and to be honest, it&#8217;s surprising to me that a huge company like Walmart never saw the efficiency in doing this before.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/fortune.com\/fortune500\/walmart-1\/\" target=\"_blank\">Walmart<\/a> <span class=\"tickershortcode quotecard_hook\" data-symbol=\"wmt\"><span class=\"wrapper trend-wrapper decrease\"> <a href=\"http:\/\/fortune.com\/fortune500\/walmart-1\/\">WMT<\/a><\/span> <span class=\"change percent\">-0.47%<\/span> <\/span> will cut some 7,000 accounting and invoicing positions within its U.S. stores as the discount retailer redeploys workers to improve in-store customer service.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0The largest U.S. retailer, also the country\u2019s largest private employer, plans to eliminate those jobs over the next several months, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/wal-mart-to-cut-7-000-back-office-store-jobs-1472743429?mod=wsj_nview_latest\">Wall Street Journal<\/a> wrote on Thursday. Those jobs are typically occupied by long-term and often higher-paid store employees, wrote the Journal, which was first to report the news.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0The benefit for Walmart is that it could then put more workers on the floor helping customers, something infinitely more valuable to the retailer as it looks to give people a reason to shop at its stores rather than on<a href=\"http:\/\/fortune.com\/fortune500\/amazoncom-18\/\" target=\"_blank\">Amazon.com<\/a> <span class=\"tickershortcode quotecard_hook\" data-symbol=\"amzn\"><span class=\"wrapper trend-wrapper increase\"> <a href=\"http:\/\/fortune.com\/fortune500\/amazon-com-18\/\">AMZN<\/a><\/span> <span class=\"change percent\">0.23%<\/span> <\/span> A company spokesperson confirmed that Walmart expects the affected employees are likely to find customer-facing roles at the Walmart store.<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"ym_1202052104859269762\" class=\"ym\"><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0The move follows <a href=\"http:\/\/fortune.com\/2016\/06\/15\/walmart-stores\/\">a test earlier this summer at 500 stores<\/a>, mostly west of Colorado, to eliminate three administrative jobs related to accounting and invoicing at each store and see if those functions could be replaced by workers in the home office and by machines. The jobs being eliminated involve counting cash or managing invoices for suppliers. Invoicing will be handled by a central office at company headquarters in Arkansas, while money will be counted at each store by a \u201ccash recycler\u201d machine.<\/em><\/div>\n<p><em>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0The new cuts come as Walmart looks to shift more of its spending onto employees who work on the store floor stocking shelves and interacting with customers. The company said at its <a href=\"http:\/\/fortune.com\/2016\/06\/03\/walmart-tech-shareholder\/\">annual shareholder meeting<\/a> in June that customer satisfaction scores had risen 79 weeks in a row, a momentum it wants to continue. Walmart has enjoyed <a href=\"http:\/\/fortune.com\/2016\/08\/18\/walmart-ecommerce-2\/\">eight straight quarters of U.S. same-store sales gains<\/a>, while traffic has improved for seven periods. At the same time, the company is looking to recover some of what it is spending on wage increases through cost cuts.<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"video-wrapper\" data-ratio=\"0.56363636363636\" data-pos=\"1\"><em>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Walmart has spent $2.7 billion on raises for store workers to keep them motivated at a time their jobs are more complex than they used to be because of new technologies. The wage hikes over the past two calendar years have taken the minimum hourly pay for store workers to $10 an hour.
