{"id":1400,"date":"2015-11-25T09:41:54","date_gmt":"2015-11-25T17:41:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/re-tales.net\/?p=1400"},"modified":"2015-11-25T09:41:54","modified_gmt":"2015-11-25T17:41:54","slug":"the-6-types-of-black-friday-shoppers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/re-tales.net\/?p=1400","title":{"rendered":"The 6 Types of Black Friday Shoppers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"asset-img-link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.retailhellunderground.com\/.a\/6a00e54f10a098883401b8d1798b9a970c-pi\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"asset asset-image at-xid-6a00e54f10a098883401b8d1798b9a970c img-responsive\" title=\"Shoppers\" src=\"http:\/\/www.retailhellunderground.com\/.a\/6a00e54f10a098883401b8d1798b9a970c-650wi\" alt=\"Shoppers\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m part Online Deal Hunter but mostly Avoider, how about you? \u00a0 As the sergeant used to say on Hill Street Blues, Lets be CAREFUL out there. \u00a0 And be sure to have a great Thanksgiving if you&#8217;re not working of course&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Love it or hate it, Black Friday is just around the corner.<\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_18_1_1_1448176492796_2253\"><em>Bargains abound, but so do pre-dawn stampedes over flat-screen TVs and discounted handbags.<\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_18_1_1_1448176492796_2255\"><em>Merchants have taken the shopping weekend to extremes over the last decade, fighting for a piece of a sometimes-shrinking economic pie by offering bigger, earlier and more sales. The recession may have even hastened the trend, as many shops responded to the sudden downturn in 2008 by slashing prices to move their inventory.<\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_18_1_1_1448176492796_2268\"><em>\u201cRetailers always want the consumer to pick them and they\u2019re always in competition, but it became an absolute frenzy. It was for survival,\u201d says Kit Yarrow, a consumer psychology expert and professor emeritus at Golden Gate University. \u201cIt taught us to crave and expect the bargain \u2014 more than a deal, it became a circus.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_18_1_1_1448176492796_2270\"><em>And if the body count is any indication, it\u2019s a Hunger Games-style circus at that. Ninety-eight people have been injured on Black Friday and seven killed since 2006, according to the<a href=\"http:\/\/blackfridaydeathcount.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-rapid_p=\"10\">website<\/a>BlackFridayDeathCount.com.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cStress tends to rob us of some of our logic and crowds are stressful,\u201d Yarrow adds.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Hot deals can prompt a scarcity mentality \u2014 a fear that everybody else will have something that you don\u2019t \u2014 while the massive crowds can lead to aggressive behavior as a means of self-protection.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>At the same time, there\u2019s also growing \u201cambivalence and doubt\u201d tempering the fanfare around Black Friday, says Deborah Fowler, a professor of retail management at Texas Tech University.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWhat I\u2019ve seen in the past few years is that retailers weren\u2019t making their numbers, so they kept dropping their prices. You\u2019d buy something on Black Friday and then go back and the prices would be even lower,\u201d she adds.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Not to mention that many outlets are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thefiscaltimes.com\/2015\/10\/28\/Here-s-Day-s-Better-Deals-Black-Friday\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-rapid_p=\"12\">already offering<\/a> competitive deals both online and in stores, all through the month of November. Even the phase \u201cBlack Friday\u201d has lost some of its meaning. Amazon, for example, touted its \u201cPrime Day\u201d in July as having \u201cmore deals than Black Friday.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIt\u2019s become a term that\u2019s almost generic as a trigger for \u2018this is a good sale,\u2019\u201d says Jane Thomas, a professor of marketing at Winthrop University. \u201cIt\u2019s losing a lot of its punch with that.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>But despite these growing challenges, and even if Black Friday <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thefiscaltimes.com\/2015\/11\/13\/Here-s-Why-Black-Friday-Will-Be-Bust-Year\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-rapid_p=\"13\">falls short<\/a> of expectations again this year, millions of people are still expected to hit the linoleum in search of savings. More than 133 million people reportedly shopped over the Thanksgiving weekend last year, according to the National Retail Federation \u2014 nearly double the number who <a href=\"http:\/\/mic.com\/articles\/105368\/one-number-reveals-a-major-problem-with-america-s-priorities#.HuDxmthef\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-rapid_p=\"14\">turned out<\/a> to vote in the midterm elections.<a class=\"asset-img-link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.retailhellunderground.com\/.a\/6a00e54f10a098883401b7c7efc535970b-pi\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/em><br \/>\n<em> What drives these shoppers? Below is our rundown of who\u2019s headed to the mall, and who\u2019s staying home, this Black Friday.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>The Traditionalists:<\/strong><\/span> These are your nostalgia-filled loyalists. They\u2019re the ones who shopped with mom and grandma every year as a kid after leafing through Thursday\u2019s newspaper fliers. Or the shoppers who make the holiday kickoff their annual gathering with siblings or close friends.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201c\u2018This is what we do every year; it\u2019s part of our ritual,\u2019\u201d Thomas says, describing the traditionalists. \u201cIt\u2019s very strategic. \u2018We\u2019re on a mission. I\u2019m going to Walmart to get my TV for $199 and then I\u2019m going to go to the next store. But it\u2019s part of the fun.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>The Competitive Sport Shoppers:<\/strong><\/span> It\u2019s all about earning the bragging rights for this cohort \u2014 and now, of course, about the opportunity to share your tales and treasures on social media. The adrenaline rush and the thrill of the hunt turn on these deal-seekers, as does regaling their mission to any family and friends willing to listen.<\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_18_1_1_1448176492796_2274\"><em>These are the folks you\u2019ll most likely want to avoid in the stores, if you value your life and limbs. FOMO level: High.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>The Holiday Cheerleaders:<\/strong><\/span> This group heads out less for the shopping than for the overall experience \u2014 they\u2019re in it for the novelty. Thanksgiving has long been the official marker for the beginning of the Christmas season, and these mall-goers take that milestone seriously. \u201cIt kicks off the holiday for them. They\u2019re going to the mall and to see Santa and they\u2019ll go to Starbucks and have an eggnog latte,\u201d says Thomas. Consider sporting a reindeer sweater or jaunty elf hat if you want to win over this crowd.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Online Deal Hunters<\/span>:<\/strong> Of course, Internet shopping grows more ubiquitous every year, giving people the chance to seek out the best deals without even having to kick off their fuzzy slippers. Shoppers spent 42 percent of their budgets online last year on Black Friday, according to the NRF. And half of survey respondents said they planned to participate in \u201cCyber Monday.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_18_1_1_1448176492796_2276\"><em>Even those shopping in stores are turning more frequently to their phones to crosscheck prices and scan for deals, experts noted.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>The Penny Pinchers: <\/strong><\/span>These folks might not have the means to afford full-priced gifts, which has historically forced them to the stores after Thanksgiving. They may also not have the luxury of many days off throughout the holiday season to get their shopping done. So Black Friday is more of a means to an end than anything else.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cFor a lot of people, their kid wants something or they need something and it\u2019s the time they can get it. They just have to suffer a little bit to get there,\u201d says Yarrow.<\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_18_1_1_1448176492796_2298\"><em>Fortunately, this is the group most likely to benefit as sales stretch out over longer periods of time and move online. There are increasingly alternatives to duking it out with the mob in the middle of the night.<\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_18_1_1_1448176492796_2294\"><em><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>The Avoiders:<\/strong><\/span> Maybe they bought their gifts over the summer. Maybe they realize that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/articles\/business\/the_dismal_science\/2009\/12\/you_shouldnt_have.html\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-rapid_p=\"18\">gifts are inefficient<\/a> relative to cold, hard cash.
