\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0Buzzfeed <\/a>asked their readers for the most awkward thing that happened to them during a job interview and some of them are classic. \u00a0 I can’t think of anything awkward that happened to me WHILE I was being interviewed, but I do remember a classic response to a question from an applicant one time. \u00a0 \u00a0I was interviewing a 20-something for a Management Trainee position. \u00a0We generally attracted and looked for people with previous retail experience, but he had none–all of his jobs had been in finance and computers. \u00a0 \u00a0 Usually at the end of the interview I’d explain what a manager trainee does (since some had the idea they were going to sit in an office and shadow the manager, when in fact they’d be checking, getting carts and stocking shelves just like everyone else….) and I told this guy that he’d be cashiering and dealing with customers a lot. \u00a0Usually an applicant would say “I’m a people person!” \u00a0or “I give great customer service!” but this tech-oriented guy instead said, “Oh, I think I’ll be good at interfacing with the end user.<\/span>” \u00a0 \u00a0Needless to say, I decided retail was not in his immediate future as a career.<\/p>\n

1. The statue.<\/h2>\n

I had a video interview for a very large company. The computer would ask a question and record your answer to send to management. You had 30 seconds, no more no less, to answer the question. For one question, I ran out of things to talk about so I decided to stand really still and not blink for 15 seconds<\/b> to make it look like the video froze\u2026<\/p>\n

That\u2019s probably the reason why I didn\u2019t get the job.<\/p>\n

2. The breast interview ever.<\/h2>\n

I used the term abreast while answering a question about technical expertise. No big deal except I couldn\u2019t stop using it after that. I said abreast approximately 10 more times\u2026it was a tragic broken record<\/b> that I just.couldn\u2019t.stop.<\/p>\n

3. The hard of hearing.<\/h2>\n

I was in an interview for a spa, and while the interviewer was looking at my resume, she asked about when I worked at a dog groomer\u2019s. She asked about my experience there, what my favourite dog was, and what I did during my time at that job. I answered both questions like a rockstar, BUT THEN she asked me, \u201cso did you handle the duties?\u201d I thought she meant \u201cdoodies\u201d<\/b>. I was like \u201coh yeah, all the time. It got kinda messy sometimes, but it\u2019s part of the job, so I didn\u2019t mind\u201d. She looked at me, kind of confused for a sec, and then I realised she meant \u201cjob duties\u201d. I looked at her, and then, very loudly, went \u201coh my god, I thought you meant poo-doodies, not \u2018duties\u2019!\u201d And then I couldn\u2019t stop laughing out of nervousness and sheer terror.<\/p>\n

Didn\u2019t get that job.<\/p>\n

4. The straight face.<\/h2>\n

The woman interviewing me for a job as an assistant for a magazine asked me what a weakness of mine was and I replied very seriously:<\/p>\n

5. The trojan horse.<\/h2>\n

I was asked what brands I follow<\/b> on Twitter and replied \u201cTrojan\u201d.<\/b><\/p>\n

6. The diddler.<\/h2>\n

I was young and the only stockings I had were the kind that attach to garters. As the interviewer and I walked to her office, I felt the first two garters snap. When I sat down across from her, I felt the remaining two garters snap. I knew when I stood up my stockings would fall to my ankles. I spent the entire interview fishing under my skirt<\/b> with both hands trying to attach one garter to each stocking. The interviewer probably thought I was diddling myself!<\/b><\/p>\n

Didn\u2019t get the job, but I did get out of there with my stockings in place!<\/p>\n

7. The lawn chair.<\/h2>\n

I was once asked what type of furniture I\u2019d be, and rather than thinking through the best way to phrase my response, I blurted out \u201clawn chair because I\u2019m cheap and easy\u201d<\/b>. I immediately regretted my impulse answer.<\/p>\n

8. The backward shirt.<\/h2>\n

Wore my shirt backwards by accident<\/b> and spent the whole interview with a red face trying to hold my neck just in case she could see my tag seams.<\/p>\n

9. The clutz.<\/h2>\n

A few years ago, I was interviewing at an organic grocery store. The interview was held in an upstairs office. Once done, the lady who interviewed me walked me downstairs. Being the clutz that I am, I tripped walking downstairs.<\/b> On my way down, I grabbed the interviewer lady\u2019s hair (hard) to try to help myself. I pulled her all the way down with me and we both tumbled down a few stairs<\/b>. She tried to be cool about it, but she was very obviously pissed that I pulled her hair in an attempt to save my clumsy ass. Not to mention, I\u2019m pretty sure I must have ripped out some of her hair.<\/p>\n

Needless to say, I never got called back.<\/p>\n

10. The potato scribbler.<\/h2>\n

I once panicked after getting a call back while cooking and ran outside away from my barking dogs with only the phone, a knife, and a potato where I accidentally locked myself out and told the employer \u201csorry, sorry, hold on I\u2019m writing the number on a potato\u201d<\/b>. In the next interview, I accidentally said fuck.<\/p>\n

Still got the job.<\/p>\n

11. The faker.<\/h2>\n

I pretended to sneeze because I was trying to think of an answer.<\/b> It was super obvious that it was fake, and one of my interviewers laughed.<\/p>\n

12. The awkward silence.<\/h2>\n

I was looking to move departments when I worked for my school\u2019s library and I had an interview with one of the directors in his office. I was trying to make small talk and noticed a picture on his desk of a woman and a dog. I gestured toward it and said \u201cis that an Irish Setter?\u201d<\/b> He looked up at me, paused, and with the straightest face said \u201cno, that\u2019s my wife\u201d.<\/b><\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t laugh or smile. I didn\u2019t laugh or smile. And a long awkward silence followed.<\/p>\n

I ended up getting the job.<\/p>\n

13. The free willy.<\/h2>\n

I went to the bathroom prior to my interview\u2026turns out I sat through the entire interview with my fly down.<\/b><\/p>\n

14. The dismissal.<\/h2>\n

The interviewer asked me \u201cif you were a car part, what part would you be?\u201d<\/b> I got really nervous and went on a nonsensical tangent about how I would be the wheels and then just stopped abruptly mid\u2013sentence. After about 15 seconds of silence, she says \u201c\u2026can you elaborate?\u201d and I panicked and blurted out \u201cwell, actually I\u2019m a person and not a car, so no\u201d.<\/b><\/p>\n

16. The tickling cough.<\/h2>\n

During an interview I had \u201cEverything Comes Down to Poo\u201d from the My Musical episode of Scrubs running through my head<\/b>. I kept laughing, but tried to play it off as a tickling cough.<\/p>\n

Flew in for an interview, had 102 fever. When one of the interviewers asked if I had flown in that morning, I responded \u201cyes, and boy, are my arms tired!\u201d<\/b> Crickets. Not a sound in the room.<\/p>\n

Needless to say, I did NOT get the job.<\/p>\n

19. The green underwear.<\/h2>\n

I interviewed for this secretarial position and when I arrived they showed me into this little conference room and told me to have a seat. As I sat down I felt the zipper on the back of my pencil skirt burst open. So I sat through the whole interview trying to figure out how I was going to to get up and walk away without having the two people interviewing me notice the giant gaping hole in my skirt where my very professional (forgot to do laundry) bright green underwear was showing through.<\/p>\n

So when the interview was over\u2026and we finally got to the office lobby I thought I might be home free, but they stood there waiting to see me out\u2026and I had to just hold my head up high and walk out of there with half the office staring at my ass<\/b>.<\/p>\n

I did not get a call back.<\/p>\n

My friend dragged me to an open interview for a new restaurant that was opening\u2026I was asked the question \u201cif you could be any kind of soup, what kind of soup would you be?\u201d I said \u201cwell, there\u2019s already a pea soup, so I would be a poo soup<\/b>\u201d.<\/p>\n
